Welcome to Westways

Community School

Westways Primary is a successful, expanding school with a richness of cultural and social diversity.

The multinational and multicultural character of our school is both enriching as well as challenging. Typically, we have families from over 20 different countries speaking almost as many different languages.

The international nature of the school offers all of us the opportunity to experience and benefit from other cultures. We learn to respect and enjoy differences but equally important we learn to recognise what we have in common and what ties us together.

Westways offers an excellent opportunity to further our ideals of equal rights, equal opportunities and responsibilities for all.

Westways is a large Primary School with 481 pupils on roll aged 3 to 11 years.  The school is housed in three buildings which provide a spacious learning environment.

The buildings are designated to each stage in learning.  We have a fully integrated Foundation Stage Unit for 3 and 4 year olds in Warwick Building, 2 classes in each year group at Key Stage 1 (5-7 year olds) in Mona Building and also at Key Stage 2 (8-11 year olds) in Western Building.

We have excellent facilities for Music, Art and ICT and also areas such as  Cloud Nine for small group work and the Den which is the Special Educational Needs base.

We continue to develop our outdoor learning environment.  The Foundation Unit has a separate, secure play area with planning for exciting developments this coming year.  We have designated one large hard surface space as a Sports area; another such area is used by Key Stage 1 children and includes a 'traverse' climbing wall.  We have a further area for play in Western playground that has an adventure trail.  We also have a delightful Wildlife garden that provides an exciting and ever changing outdoor classroom all year round.

We provide a stimulating and creative curriculum with a strong emphasis on the Arts and Sports.

Our academic achievements were recognised by the DfES when we received the school achievement award for sustained improvement in SATs results at the end of Key Stage 2 and more recently we achieved the standard for Investors in People.  This standard demonstrates that at Westways we develop staff effectively in order to improve our school.  In June 2006 we were awarded the Silver Artsmark, a recognition of our commitment to the full range of arts - music, dance, drama and art & design. Currently, we are making applications for the Healthy School Standard.

Our partnership with the Language College enables Key Stage 2 children to experience a range of languages including Japanese, Spanish and Italian. Currently, we are involved in an exciting project with Western Park Museum in developing the Arctic exhibit space.

We enjoy a range of educational visits to enhance the curriculum and also invite theatre, artists, musicians, dancers, and sports coaches etc. into school to work with the children.

The school year dates and a map of the school can be downloaded from the bottom of the page.
